Update from the Campus Principal

Southern Campus Principal Report by Caroline Tompkin

And just like that, we are halfway through the year! Can you believe it?

Our students have worked diligently throughout the term to complete their formative and summative assessments, and today reports will sent home. These reports provide an opportunity to celebrate achievements while also identifying areas for growth as we move into Semester Two.

I encourage parents to read through reports with their children. Discussing teacher's comments, recognising progress, and setting goals for improvement can be a powerful way for families and schools to work together in supporting student success. Every student has subjects they enjoy and excel in, as well as areas they may find more challenging. Celebrating successes while encouraging perseverance and growth in areas of difficulty are important life lessons. Sometimes we simply need to tackle tasks that are not our favourites, and doing so with a positive attitude and a commitment to our best effort is a valuable skill that will serve students well beyond school.

I would also like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our teachers and administration staff for their dedication and ongoing support throughout the semester. Their commitment to providing high-quality learning experiences, encouragement, and care has played a significant role in helping our students achieve their personal best. The success and growth we celebrate are a reflection of the strong partnership between students, families, and staff, and I am incredibly grateful for all they do.

Today, we enjoyed a wonderful Community Celebration Day organised by our Student Leadership Team. I congratulate them on delivering such a well-run event. The day involved a great deal of planning and coordination; from deciding on the lunch menu and managing food orders, to working with Miss Emily and Mrs. Brown on canteen app payments, finalising shopping lists, organising student stall groups, and ensuring lunches were distributed correctly. On top of all that, they coordinated the final assembly to ensure we celebrated student achievement and gave clear information to help the day run smoothly.

It was a significant undertaking, and with just a little guidance and some thoughtful questions along the way, they excelled. Congratulations to the Student Leadership Team; Carlos, Harlow, Ricardo and Taani (and side kick, Renzo) for organising a fantastic end to Term Two Day. We look forward to seeing the creative fundraising initiatives they develop throughout the remainder of the year.

This week, we also farewelled Mrs. Earnshaw from the Primary. On Wednesday, we had the opportunity to celebrate her contribution with morning tea at Gnowangerup, generously provided by some of our wonderful mums. While we are sad to see her leave, this is certainly not goodbye. We look forward to welcoming Mrs. Earnshaw back for relief work in the future. Her kindness, grace, and warmth have touched the lives of both students, staff, and families, and she will be greatly missed. Thank you, Mrs. Earnshaw, for all your hard work and dedication. We look forward to seeing you again soon; especially when it's time to support the Primary students in their vegetable garden!

As we conclude Term Two and this final newsletter article for the term, I would like to wish all families a well-deserved break. (With the exception of our Year 12 students, who will no doubt be studying and completing tasks as they prepare for their final term of school!) I hope everyone enjoys some time resting, recharging, and spending time with family and friends.

We look forward to welcoming students back to Gnowangerup Campus on Tuesday 21 July.

Food Technology Week 10

Throughout Term 2, Year 7s made several batches of muffins and when the last batch was made, they completed a sensory analysis of their recipe. In this task, students expanded their vocabulary beyond using the description - ‘yummy’!

In the last week of term and with their assignment behind them, Year 8 conducted a culinary experiment. Each group was given a recipe for pancakes and a smoothie. One - the usual type one would use for pancakes and the other used whole wheat flour, coconut sugar, and oats. The same with the smoothie. One group used oats, honey and peanut butter for their smoothie. It was pleasing to see that all students willingly tasted and enjoyed the ‘healthier’ pancake and smoothie.

Year 9/10 students conducted a culinary experiment too. Each group chose a store-bought product - frozen waffles, Maggi chicken noodles, Woolworths Frozen Fettucine – and made the same from scratch. This in the endeavour to compare, taste, presentation, nutritional value. Fantastic exercise well executed by all.
