Welcome to Term 2

I hope all families enjoyed a restful term break and had the opportunity to spend time together. It has been a positive and purposeful start to Term 2 at OSG Brisbane, and it has been wonderful to see students return to campus settled, engaged and ready to learn.

We began the term by coming together as a community to acknowledge ANZAC Day, taking time to reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who have served our nation.

This term we welcomed two new staff members to the Brisbane Campus. Ms Rhonda Shamoail has joined us as Assistant Regional Head of Department (Science) and is based here in Brisbane. Mr Daniel Cott has also joined our Primary team as a Year 5/6 teacher. Daniel has been team-teaching with Ms Ash Meredith to support students as they settle into the term, and our new class structure will commence from Monday next week. We appreciate the support and flexibility of families as students transition into this next phase, and we look forward to the opportunities this structure will provide.

Students have already been engaged in a range of rich learning and wellbeing experiences. Primary students participated enthusiastically in activities for History Week, while Secondary students commenced the first OSG Aware workshops for the year. These sessions were held on Thursday 7 May for Year 7, 9 and 11 students, with students from the Toowoomba Campus joining us here in Brisbane. The workshops were facilitated by trained staff from both campuses, with Campus Administrators also present to provide a community perspective. OSG Aware continues to play an important role in supporting students’ personal development, wellbeing and positive decision-making.

We were also delighted to welcome many mothers and mother figures to campus for our Mother’s Day Morning Tea, hosted by our Student Leadership Team. The morning provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate, connect and strengthen community relationships. Following the morning tea, parents joined Assistant Campus Principal Mr Shane Price and me for an information and feedback session focused on the use of the IXL program to support learning in English and Mathematics. We appreciated the thoughtful questions, feedback and conversations shared during this session.

Clarke Thrush is in Year 5 on the Brisbane campus.

One of my favourite subjects is Maths because I find it fun and challenging. I also really enjoy sport because I like playing lots of different types of sports and games.

I am enjoying being in Year 5 because the work is more challenging and it helps me learn new things. Yesterday, our primary school had an incursion about Australian History. I found it really interesting, and we learned lots of useful information that will help us with the upcoming museum competition.

I am also looking forward to taking part in the Lego Challenge. We will get to use the Scratch coding program together with Lego that we build ourselves, which is exciting because they are both things I really enjoy doing.

As you are aware, we have recently welcomed a new teacher, Mr Daniel Cott, to our school. We are very excited to have him join our campus. Mr Cott brings a strong passion for teaching and learning, and over the past two weeks he has been team teaching alongside Ms Meredith, getting to know the students and our school community.

Mr Cott has shared the following about his teaching approach:

“As a primary trained educator with over 8 years' experience, empathy, respect and compassion drive my practise. I am always looking for engaging and interesting ways to captivate my learners. I am a certified scuba diver with a background in ecosystem management, so educating young people about the importance and beauty of our natural world is always exciting to bring into my classroom. I am very excited to be working with the Year 5/6's class here at OSG Brisbane and working collaboratively with Ms Meredith.”

From next week, the current Year 5/6 class will be split into two Year 5/6 classes.

While there will be two separate classes, students will continue to work closely together. The classes will collaborate for core subjects such as Mathematics and English and will also come together for specialist lessons including Digital Technologies, Music, Art, French, and Physical Education.

In forming the new class groups, our team has taken great care to consider both friendship groups and individual academic needs to ensure the best possible learning environment for all students.

Dear Parents and Carers,

In 2026, all OneSchool Global Australia Primary students will participate in the Australasian Problem-Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO) program across Terms 2 and 3.

APSMO is a levelled mathematics program designed to develop students’ problem-solving, reasoning, and thinking skills through engaging and challenging tasks. Students work on problems suited to their current level, helping build confidence, creativity, and perseverance in mathematics.

How APSMO Works
• Students will take part in weekly APSMO sessions, focused on developing key problem-solving strategies.
• Activities include a mix of explicit teaching, hands-on challenges, and discussions, allowing students to explain their thinking and learn from others.
• Depending on the level, students may work more independently or more collaboratively.

APSMO Challenges
• Some APSMO levels includes challenges held twice each term (usually around Weeks 3 and 8).
• These challenges vary by level and may involve:
o Individual problem-solving papers, or
o Collaborative team challenges
• Not all levels complete formal tests; some focus on guided activities and games that build foundational skills.

APSMO Levels Explained
Students are already placed in one of the following APSMO levels based on their learning needs:
• Maths Olympiad (Junior) Designed for high-achieving students, offering challenging problems that promote advanced reasoning, creativity, and flexible thinking.
• Maths Games Focuses on developing problem-solving skills through engaging, real-world style problems while building enjoyment and confidence in mathematics.
• Maths Explorer Introduces problem-solving through fun, practical, and collaborative activities that students can relate to.
• Maths Quest Encourages students to explore early problem-solving concepts through interactive activities and games, supporting confidence and teamwork.

APSMO is embedded within our regular mathematics Lesson time and supports our ongoing commitment to high-quality, explicit teaching of problem solving. The APSMO program complements our classroom learning and helps students develop important thinking skills that may extend beyond the mathematics classroom.

Primary students have been having lots of fun learning about solids, liquids, and gases through hands-on science experiments. We have explored how materials change and move, and recorded our observations carefully.

Year 5 and 6 students have also enjoyed getting to know our new teacher, Mr Cott. It’s been a great start to the term, with lots of learning, laughter, and teamwork.

Term two is off to a great start with the new Study Slip Initiative underway. The study slips are a valuable SLT initiative that supports structured discussion and reflection on how students use their time effectively during The Study. Congratulations to Ella, Sven, and Avah for winning the first $20 gift cards of the program.

Today we held a Mothers Day morning tea, big thankyou to all that attended. Congratulations to Emma Pringle, Glenys Taylor, and Jess Jensen for winning the hampers.

Looking forward to keeping up the strong momentum for the remainder of the term.

This week, we hosted the first OSG Aware workshop of 2026. Students from Years 7, 9, and 11 from the Brisbane and Toowoomba campuses came together to participate in this important program. The workshop provides learning opportunities that sit outside our usual curriculum but are essential for students personal growth and development as confident, informed individuals.

It is always a privilege to collaborate with students from another campus, and this is one of the great strengths of the OSG system.

The Year 9 &10 students have begun their Farm to Fork journey. Their guiding question is: How can I create and present a sustainable dish that showcases local produce and tells its story from farm to plate? Using creativity and problem-solving, students will apply design thinking and innovation to plan and prepare a meal using locally sourced, sustainable ingredients—whether it’s fresh eggs, basil from their backyard, or locally farmed beef.

Year 7 students have been exploring the big question: How do recipes, cooking methods, kitchen organisation, and sensory properties influence the food we create in school and the wider community? Throughout the assignment they are building confidence and independence by learning how recipes are structured, understanding key cooking terms, and developing effective kitchen organisation skills. Students are also investigating how different cooking methods impact ingredients and their sensory properties, including taste, texture, smell, and appearance. This learning will include an Assessment on Muffin Design, where students will experiment with recipes and explore sustainability through effective storage and freezing techniques.

Year 8 students are continuing their FEAST assignment, investigating food waste while strengthening their cooking and food safety skills. Using design thinking, they are developing solutions to reduce waste and promote healthy eating. Students are working collaboratively in practical lessons and reflecting on how their choices can make a positive impact. This task builds on their prior learning in safe food handling, healthy eating, and recipe design, as they create a “Use It Up” recipe, along with a poster and information card, applying their knowledge to real-world food challenges.

On Tuesday, 5 May 2026, the QLD Year 11 & 12 Maths Methods students had the opportunity to visit the Qantas Pilot Academy at Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport.

Students were able to see firsthand how the Maths Methods curriculum is applied in aviation, giving them a real-world understanding of the mathematical concepts they study.

On 22 May, all students at OneSchool Global will take part in Mission Nutrition, a full day wellbeing event delivered across all campuses worldwide.

Mission Nutrition helps students understand how food and hydration support energy, focus, health, and learning. The day is interactive and age appropriate, with students working through guided activities led by their teachers.

This is not a normal school day. Students will take part in hands on learning designed to build practical skills they can use at school and at home.

To introduce the event and build excitement, we invite families to watch a short teaser video.

More information will be shared with families in May, including what students will experience on the day.

Last term, OneSchool Global launched Precious Cargo, a new global safety campaign for all volunteer bus drivers. The campaign includes a powerful safety film that highlights the responsibility our drivers carry every day and reinforces key expectations around seatbelts, fatigue, distractions, speed, and substances.

Our drivers play a vital role in keeping students safe, and this campaign supports them with clear, consistent safety standards across all 20 countries in our network.

Wear your seatbelt properly every time you’re on the bus

Stay seated while the bus is moving

Avoid distracting the driver – their focus keeps everyone safe

Look out for each other when getting on and off the bus
