As we come to the end of Week 8, and with the Year 7–11 exams now completed, it is important for students to take the time to reflect on their learning across Semester 1. I encourage all students to speak with their teachers, ask for feedback and, most importantly, accept that feedback as a way to continue improving.

It was great to spend time in Primary this week and see how students are developing their knowledge of the L2L framework. It was also pleasing to see them using the Primary learning spaces with growing confidence and purpose.

For High School parents, I encourage you to take some time to log into your child’s Canvas courses and check their submission rate. It is important that students regularly submit their work to their teachers. Both summative tasks and class tasks should be completed, as this demonstrates engagement in their coursework and allows teachers to provide the support and feedback needed. If you are unsure how to find this information, please reach out and I would be happy to organise a Zoom to guide you through the process.

Students are also getting excited for our Activity Day at the end of term on Friday, 3 July. It sounds like it will be a fun lunchtime of games and food. Please add this date to your calendar so you can come along and join us.

It has been another busy and productive fortnight in our classroom, with students engaging enthusiastically in a range of learning experiences. In Mathematics, there has been a strong focus on measurement, including length, mass, capacity, perimeter and area. Students have particularly enjoyed the hands-on nature of these lessons, working collaboratively to solve problems. It has been wonderful to see the level of discussion taking place, with students confidently explaining their mathematical reasoning and justifying their thinking.

Our new Food Technology assignment has also been a highlight. Students have been consolidating their understanding of healthy food choices and nutrition and they thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to apply this knowledge in a practical way. Working with Mr Newman, they had so much fun preparing and creating their own healthy snacks. This hands-on experience has not only reinforced their learning but also encouraged independence and creativity in the kitchen.

Gymnastics wrapped up this fortnight, and what a fantastic program it has been! Students have made impressive progress, developing their confidence and skills across a range of activities. They are now demonstrating safe landings, balancing on the beam, navigating the foam pit, as well as tumbling, rolling and cartwheeling with growing confidence. Climbing the ninja wall was certainly a favourite! It has been wonderful to see such enthusiasm and enjoyment during each session. Next term, students will be participating in our annual tennis lessons—please keep an eye out for the permission note coming soon.

Looking ahead, we are excited for Book Week in Week 6 next term. This is always a special time to celebrate a love of reading. Students will have the opportunity to take part in the ‘Story in a Jar’ competition, where they represent a favourite book inside a jar. We encourage students to begin collecting a suitable jar at home in preparation for this engaging and creative activity.

Year 8 Visual Arts

In this artwork, we had to design and construct a low-relief sculpture inspired by a mythological dragon. We transformed our creature into a bold, stylised geometric composition, by using colour, shape, and texture to bring our artworks to life. This project moves from realism to abstraction — instead of fine details, we expressed our dragon’s character and energy through simplified forms and vibrant colour contrasts.

In addition to the low-relief sculpture, we created a dragon’s eye sculpture using slab construction techniques in clay, focusing on shaping the eye and part of the dragon’s face. We added texture and patterns to decorate the surface and included 3D details like horns, scales, and eyelids to make it more realistic and detailed. We had several lessons to complete the task so we were able to take our time to refine our design and improve the overall quality of our sculpture.

Campus Community Support (CCS) Program

OSG Armidale Campus is inviting community members to spend a rostered day on campus to support the Campus Community Support (CCS) program. We warmly invite members of our wider community to get involved — including grandparents, uncles, aunts and other family members — in addition to parents.

The role of the CCS is to provide a positive influence for the campus and to support school staff in view of them maintaining and upholding the ethos and values of the community. An important part of the CCS role is to be seen but not interfering, on the alert and helpful to the staff and students at all times.

Community Campus Support (CCS) personnel must complete the Volunteer Induction including a valid Working with Children Check.
