Update from the Campus Principal

Update from the Launceston Campus Principal

In the 4 weeks of Term 2 so far, we have had a very packed schedule at OSG! We recognised our hard-working admin teams and welcomed mums and grandmothers to be celebrated on both campuses for Mother’s Day. Year 10 students participated in a driver safety course, and Year 7, 9 and 11 students engaged with the first OSGAware workshop of the year. This past week, our primary students commenced OSGAware as well, and on Friday, students participated in the global event, Mission Nutrition, occurring on campuses in every region! In Tasmania, students gathered in curated spaces on the Launceston campus to discuss core themes of nutrition foundations, food in the modern world and developing healthy habits. This seemed to be well received by our students and we are hoping that this will have an impact on food choices moving forward.

This week, we had our first homeroom assembly on Wednesday morning, hosted by students in Year 11. This was a great opportunity to hear student perspectives on a range of relevant topics. The Year 11 students shared study tips, reminders about the Student Discipline policy, and spoke about what being diligent means to them, which is the current Student Persona focus. We are looking forward to the Year 7-10 students in Hobart hosting the next assembly on the 3rd of June!

Last week, I had the privilege of taking the Year 9 students for homeroom, and discussed with them what planning routines have been working well. We spoke about using some set study routines when in the Learning Centre, as a way to level up productivity. This is of course a great opportunity to suggest some strategies for students to implement in the coming weeks! Here are 3 for students to try:

🕜 Time Blocking: sometimes referred to as task sprints, this technique encourages the use of a 20-minute timer to keep you on task. After the 20 minutes timer is up, take a 5-minute break and then go again!

🐸 Eat the Frog: sounds like a difficult task... and that is the point! The first item on your job list should be the most difficult. Get the hard thing out of the way first, don’t put it off. Then you can move on to other tasks later in the day.

📝 The Kanban Board: This is a great planning tool, particularly for those who use sticky notes. Create a visual on your screen of tasks which are: yet to be done, in the process of completion, and finished.

These techniques will place students in good stead for the upcoming exams. They are encouraged to experiment with techniques that work effectively for them!

Finally, we are saying farewell to a couple of staff members over the next week. Mr Fox and Mr Higginbotham will both be finishing up with OSG Tasmania and I would like to take the opportunity to thank them for their contributions and wish them all the best in the next chapter.

Subject Update: PE

In PE this term, students have begun their Net and Wall Games unit with a focus on Pickleball. Throughout the opening weeks of Term 2, students have developed their understanding of the rules and gameplay while building skills associated with the sport. They have practiced and applied techniques such as serving, forehand and backhand shots, and rallying through both singles and doubles match play.

Our Pickleball unit will conclude in Week 3 with Primary and High School students participating in a round robin Pickleball tournament during their PE lesson.

Subject Update: Food Tech

Following the exploration of food preservation at the beginning of Term 1, the Year 9/10 Food Technology students created a range of impressive gourmet hampers as part of their Summative Assessment. Themes included Paddington, Summer Spirit and Jam. The hampers were presented professionally with individually designed labels and featured a delicious selection of preserved produce made throughout the unit.

In Term 2, students have moved into their Farm to Fork unit, where they are focusing on planning and preparing dishes that incorporate locally sourced produce. This unit encourages students to consider the importance of supporting local growers while developing their practical cooking and meal planning skills. Here is a selection of mood boards that the students have created to support their planning.

SLT Update

We hope all students and staff are settling into the term well. As we move through the busy weeks ahead, the SLT would like to remind everyone of the importance of maintaining a positive and hard-working school environment.

We would like to encourage all students to take responsibility to keep our campus clean. This includes classrooms, outdoor areas, and especially the student kitchen. Make sure rubbish is placed in bins, benches are wiped down, and dishes are clean after use, so the space stays enjoyable for everyone.

On the 12th of May, our campus participated in the CQR (Campus Quality Rubric) visit. This was a great opportunity to showcase our learning environment, and high-achieving, positive culture within our school community. Thank you to all students and staff who contributed to presenting our campus in such a positive way.

With exams coming up soon, now is the perfect time to stay organised and focused. Make use of study time, book at least 2 tutorials a week, and remember to balance study with wellbeing in view of achieving high results.

The SLT wishes everyone the very best for the busy weeks ahead and the upcoming exam period!

WHS Reminders

Hello Safety Readers,

At OSG, safety is our priority, and occasionally we must make tough decisions to uphold it.

WHS PRIMARY STUDENT SAFETYREMOVAL OF MICROWAVE USAGE FOR PRIMARY STUDENTS – REMOVED USAGES - PRIMARY STUDENT MICROWAVE/THE USE OF HOT SANDWICH PRESSES OR USE OF BOILING WATER.

Following some recent incidents and subsequent review of our workplace health & safety and supervision practices, it has been determined that primary students will no longer be permitted to use toasted sandwich makers or microwave ovens while at school.

This change has been made with student safety as the priority. While these appliances have been available in the past, their use unfortunately presents risks which include burns, improper handling and use and challenges in ensuring adequate supervision. Removing access for primary students allows us to maintain a safer and more manageable environment for all.

We kindly ask families to support this change by ensuring that students come to school with lunches that do not require heating or toasting, or the addition of boiled water (i.e. noodles). We encourage the inclusion of nutritious, ready-to-eat options that students can manage independently. (lunchbox example below)

CHILD SAFETY - LOCKDOWN

At all OSG campuses, the safety and wellbeing of our students remain our top priority.

If you are visiting the site or working in the canteen, it is essential that you understand our Lockdown Procedures for both campuses.

Please refer to the link below for details on what to listen for if a lockdown is called, where you need to go, and the actions required in the event of an emergency.

CAMPUS SPEED LIMIT REMINDERPLEASE SLOW DOWN

Several buses and parent vehicles have recently been observed travelling at unsafe speeds within the Launceston school grounds. We kindly remind all drivers to always adhere to the posted speed limits, as young children may enter the roadway unexpectedly. Thank you for helping us keep our school community safe.

TRANSPORT BUSES SPEED LIMIT REMINDERPLEASE SLOW DOWN

As a volunteer, we sincerely appreciate your ongoing support in transporting our students. Please remember to strictly follow all road speed limits—after all, you are carrying very precious cargo.

Arriving safely is far more important than arriving on time. Speeding while transporting students not only creates unnecessary risk but can also contribute to discomfort such as car sickness for passengers. We ask that you remain attentive to posted speed limits at all times and adhere to them without exception.

TO FINISH ON A LIGHTER NOTE:

Stay safe until next issue! Mrs Safety Spillane

Emergency Broadcast Testing | June

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) will begin testing of their new Aus Alert mobile phone emergency broadcast system.

Launceston has been listed as one of the testing sites and, in June, mobile users in this region should receive clearly labelled test phone messages from Aus Alert. This is ahead of national testing day scheduled for July. You may wish to advise your school community of these forthcoming events to help avoid possible confusion or anxiety.
