I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the Tasmanian OneSchool Global community. My name is John Carmody, and I will be supporting the region as the Acting Regional Principal for Tasmania.

I have been part of OneSchool Global for the past 15 years, including 12 years in leadership roles, working closely with students, staff and families across a number of campuses. During this time, I have developed a strong appreciation for the culture of our schools and the important partnership between staff, students and parents that helps create a positive learning environment.

Tasmania already has many strengths across its campuses, and I am looking forward to working closely with the Tasmanian team to continue building on these foundations as we strive to move from good to great.

I will be visiting the Tasmanian campuses from Wednesday 11 March to Friday 13 March, and I look forward to meeting students, staff and parents during this time. These visits will provide a great opportunity for me to learn more about each campus and connect with the local community.

I look forward to working alongside the Tasmanian team and supporting the continued growth of the region.

Year 7 Science

As newbies to high school, the focus for the Year 7s in science is learning how to conduct science experiments safely, using specialized equipment found in the science lab. This includes Bunsen burners, pipettes, stopwatches, balances, thermometers and measuring cylinders. There is a lot of new equipment and terminology to remember. This year’s cohort are enthusiastic and have benefited from Hobart travel to Launceston for the class to work together in the lab, as well as the support of Mrs Harris in Hobart to work in the lab there.

Year 8 Science

We started the term learning about elements and the periodic table, and how they react to form compounds.

We then moved onto a unit on Physical and Chemical change. This started with students completing experiments to demonstrate what happens to particles when they change state and will continue to explore chemical reactions and how we know when a chemical reaction has occurred. The assessment task allows students to work on a chemical reaction of their choice, and this means we are having a wide range of activities in the class as we work towards the completion of this task at the end of the term.

Year 9 Science

Our first topic for the year has been a physics topic on a range of types of energy such as light, heat and electricity. The light boxes were helpful in visualizing how light is reflected and refracted. As well as building electrical circuits using components, there are a range of online simulations that the students used to understand the concepts and build circuits.

Year 10 Science

We started the year with a chemistry unit. As well as reviewing the Periodic Table and the structure of atoms, we were able to deepen our understanding of how and why elements form bonds and the assessment task is about a commonly used substance of their choice and what type of chemical bonds are present.

Because we cannot see bonds, it is important to use models to help understand how bonding occurs. The class has also shown expertise in problem solving to balance chemical equations.

Welcome to 2026 and I am happy to be able to teach Food Technology to the Yr7’s. This term has seen us learning about and developing our knife skills and being able to cut vegetables into julienne, dice, brunoise (small cubes) and batons and the students did a wonderful job. The students also made a dip to accompany their vegetables. We have also learnt about kitchen health and safety with the students completing their ‘onguard’ training.

Last week we were fortunate enough to have the Hobart students join us in Launceston and we made both savory and sweet scones. Victoria, Flossie and Jairus made savory scones with onion, bacon and cheese, while Lauren, Arianna, Adonia and Esme made very yummy blueberry scones. All students worked cleanly and efficiently and learnt some new skills along the way. They were also able to make truffles and ham and cheese scrolls.

In the coming weeks we will be making focaccia in preparation for our assessment piece of focaccia art. I am looking forward to see the creativity flow from our wonderful students. If you have any questions or queries please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Do you know what to do if you are on campus and we need to evacuate?

Our WHS Safety Team conducts 2 Fire Emergency Evacuations annually on both sites and 2 Lock Down Drills on each site annually - making sure all staff and students are fully briefed in what needs to happen in both emergency situations.

But do you know where to go when you are visiting? Should the unforeseen occur!

Automatic Fire Brigade Response

The Fire Brigade will automatically respond when;

The glass is broken on the Manual Call Point.

A thermal or smoke detector has activated.

When contacted on 000.

LOCKDOWNS

A Lockdown would be called in the event of a suspicious intruder on or near the property who is being considered a threat. Whether the intruder is physically seen by staff or the school has been notified by police of nearby dangerous activities/persons - the school will follow our safety procedures and secure all on our campuses until the emergency passes.

Know what to listen for and when to react, and where are the designated safe places.

Through weeks 5 and 6 The SLT has continued working hard to bring new life to our schools. In week 5 we launched our ‘Class of the Term’ (COTT) initiative. This initiative is aimed at improving and recognizing good behavior in the learning center. Each week the SLT will nominate a class. This is based on how the class has been displaying the personas, behavior in the learning center and use of the learning center. At the end of each term the class with the most nominations will be awarded a pizza lunch on behalf of the SLT.

We have also been working on the national Go for Gold initiative. This initiative aims at achieving 45 house points per student across the region. The SLT has been awarding at least one house point per member to a student each week to help achieve the national goal.

In week 6 the SLT started on our learning center improvement initiative. After receiving extensive feedback from students, the SLT formulated a plan to rearrange the learning center to provide a better and more functional learning environment. The main areas identified from improvement were the need for more individual and semi collaborative spaces, the need to reduce distractions for those working in individual areas and the need for more fully enclosed individual working areas. After receiving the feedback, we rearranged the learning center accordingly. We further separated collaborative areas from semi-collaborative and individual areas to reduce distractions.

We have also created more individual areas throughout the learning center. We are still working on securing more fully enclosed individual areas and will continue to work on this problem to achieve the best working experience for the students in the learning center.

At OneSchool Global AU, all Year 10 students complete the Certificate III in Business as part of their curriculum. This qualification equips students with practical skills in administration, communication, and workplace technology - essential tools for success in senior study, part-time work, and future careers.

Completing the Certificate III in Business helps students develop confidence, organisation, and a professional mindset. It provides a real-world context for learning and gives every student a head start in understanding the business world.

We are proud to offer this program as a core part of Year 10, ensuring all students gain these valuable skills and are prepared for the next stage of their education and beyond. Students who complete all requirements will be awarded the national qualification - Certificate III in Business. Students who are only able to complete part of the qualification will still receive a statement of attainment, providing credit for the units they do achieve.

Your encouragement at home can make a real difference. We encourage parents to support their young person by discussing their learning, celebrating achievements, and encouraging them to apply the skills they are developing. Together, we can help every student succeed and make the most of this valuable qualification.
