As we come to the close of Term Two, I would like to take a moment to reflect on what has been a productive and rewarding term for our students and community. Throughout the term, students have engaged in a wide range of rich learning experiences; including Parliament House visits, Athletics Carnivals, Community lunches, Swimming Lessons, and meaningful classroom learning. These opportunities continually support the development of knowledge, skills, and character across our campus.

As a community, we can be pleased of all that has been achieved and now welcome the opportunity to pause, recharge, and enjoy valuable family time over the upcoming school holidays.

Today, our Secondary SLT worked tirelessly to prepare an engaging assembly and afternoon of activities for students. I commend Carlos, Harlow, Ricardo, and Taani for their dedication and leadership. Their commitment to modelling the OSG expectations demonstrates the high standards we hold for our students and reinforces the positive culture of our campus.

Term Two – School Time Changes

A reminder that Term Two includes an adjustment to school start and finish times:

9:00 am – School day commences

3:15 pm – School day concludes

We trust families will appreciate the later start. We kindly ask that students arrive at the bus at least five minutes before departure each morning.

Please be mindful that current roadworks and traffic conditions can result in delays. Late arrivals at bus stops place additional pressure on drivers and compromise the safe and timely arrival of students. Punctual arrival ensures students have adequate time to prepare for the day by completing planners and reviewing assessment requirements.

Bus departure time is 7:15 am sharp.

Uniform Reminder

Ahead of the new term, we ask families to review their child’s uniform to ensure it aligns with the OSG Student Uniform and Dress Code Policy. This policy supports high standards of presentation and reflects our shared values and ethos.

Our students consistently wear their uniform with pride, and we commend them for their excellent presentation. Let us continue to uphold these standards for the remainder of the year.

Hats
While hats are not mandated in Terms Two and Three, we strongly recommend students continue to wear them during break times. UV levels in the Great Southern region remain high, even on cooler or cloudy days.

School Shoes
Students are required to wear black leather or leatherlook school shoes.
Please note: Vans or ‘fashion’ style black shoes do not meet uniform requirements.

Jewellery Only a wristwatch is permitted. No other jewellery is to be worn.

As we conclude the term, I would like to sincerely thank Mrs RockwoodTurner and Mrs Labuschange for their flexibility and commitment in taking on additional duties while Mrs Earnshaw was on leave. We look forward to welcoming Mrs Earnshaw back to OSG Southern next term.

I would also like to acknowledge Mr John Carmody for overseeing our campuses earlier this year prior to my commencement. His leadership, alongside our dedicated staff, ensured continuity and strong support for our students and families.

I thank all staff, students, and families for their continued partnership and commitment. I wish everyone a safe and restful holiday break, and we look forward to welcoming students back refreshed and ready for Term Two.

Moments captured on campus.

As we wrap up Term 1, it has certainly been a busy and rewarding time in Primary. The students have done an outstanding job adjusting to the many changes and challenges we have faced this term, demonstrating resilience, flexibility and a positive attitude toward learning.

This week, we proudly held our first mentor session, where our mentors worked closely with their mentees to develop individual study plans. It was wonderful to receive such positive feedback from our senior students, who were impressed with how thoughtfully and thoroughly our Primary students planned their learning.

We would like to wish every student and parent a safe, restful and enjoyable holiday break. We are also very excited to welcome Mrs Anita Earnshaw back next term, with her first day returning in Gnowangerup on Tuesday. Our Primary students are especially looking forward to seeing her familiar smile!

To finish the term on a high note, we were fortunate to be treated to a delicious culture lunch, generously organised by Mr Lindsay and Mrs Leonie Richardson. A massive thank you to both of them for the time, effort and care they put into this special experience, creating smiles and full bellies across the whole school.

Primary Teacher

This term in foods, the Year 7s have been discovering the art of bread making. They have focussed on making focaccia but with a twist. In a ‘van Dough’ style, they needed to come up with a design that would be displayed on their bread. Students tested which ingredients would withstand baking and worked around this for their final. Being new to the cooking room, time was also spent learning the best practice of how to hold a knife when cutting and students practised chopping and dicing. This is a skill they will continue to master throughout their foods journey.

Year 8s looked at why students who eat a nutritious breakfast were at an advantage during the school day. They worked on creating a breakfast that would appeal to teenagers. This was followed by a study into food waste and how we can all work to combat this. Spaghetti bolognaise was the first dish to be tested in this Assignment and many shared how their families made this at home.

Years 9 and 10 looked at the benefits of preserving food and how these items could be made and packaged together as a Gourmet Hamper. Working in groups, they needed to think of a theme, research suitable products while considering what was in season and if they were able to use as much of the ingredient as possible. Over the term they produced four different preserved items from a variety of categories. Groups also had to design labels that would inform potential customers of ingredients, best by dates, storage advice, and possible allergens.

All students set aside time during Study to complete set tasks on the OnGuard platform. These tasks were a mix of common sense and important expectations that students need to be mindful of when working in the cooking room.
