Why standards matter.
This week, I have been fortunate to see our students excel and demonstrate an impressive standard of performance across a range of activities, an important reminder of what can be achieved when expectations remain high and consistent.
It was a pleasure to watch our SLT students lead our Tuesday morning assembly, warmly welcoming the Sydney campus SLT with confidence and professionalism. During our visit to the Bendigo campus, it was equally encouraging to observe our students liaising effectively and organising themselves with maturity and collaboration.
I was also highly impressed by the debating prowess and skill demonstrated by our Year 7 students during the cross-campus competition, reflecting their growing confidence and capability. Additionally, the positive feedback and praise from our campus visitors, including the Regional Head of Teaching and Education (Primary), Mrs Julie Murray, further highlighted the strength of teaching and learning across our campus. These moments reinforce the importance of not allowing our standards to slip, but instead continually striving for best practice in all that we do.
Maintaining high standards is essential in any school community, as these standards create the conditions in which students, staff, and families can thrive. They are not simply policies to follow; they form the foundation for a respectful, purposeful, and productive learning environment.
We see this reflected in everyday school life. When attendance expectations are upheld, learning continuity is strengthened. When assignment deadlines are consistent, students develop responsibility and resilience. Clear and consistent uniform expectations foster a shared identity and sense of belonging, while strong expectations around respectful relationships support a positive and inclusive environment for all.
Standards relating to campus facilities, transport, and conduct are equally important. When these are not consistently upheld, the consistency of expectations across the school can begin to weaken, impacting the culture and shared understanding within the community.
Maintaining high standards is not always easy, whether in schools or in the wider business world, and it depends on a shared commitment across all stakeholders. At a time when broader societal expectations can appear to be easing, it is encouraging to see the Melton campus working deliberately to ensure our standards remain strong and our progress is sustained. While this can at times involve challenging conversations and firm decisions, a consistent and united approach ensures clarity, fairness, and a positive culture.
Ultimately, maintaining high standards is not about compliance for its own sake; it is about preserving the conditions that enable every student to learn, feel supported, and succeed.
Outstanding Achievement: Premier’s VCE Awards – VET Business
We are incredibly proud to recognise two of our Melton Campus students, Zara Lindsay and Alanah Strange, who have achieved the prestigious 2025 Premier’s VCE Award for VET Business; an exceptional accomplishment that places them among the very top-performing students in Victoria.
The Premier’s VCE Awards are awarded each year by the Victorian Government to students who demonstrate outstanding academic and vocational achievement in their VCE studies. In the case of VET subjects such as Business, these awards typically recognise students who achieve the highest study score in the state, often requiring near-perfect performance across all assessment components. These awards are presented across all VCE subjects, meaning that, in most cases, only one or a very small number of students statewide are recognised in each study area.
This recognition is particularly significant when considered within the broader VCE cohort. Each year, over 65,000 students complete the VCE in Victoria, yet only around 315 receive a Premier’s VCE Award, highlighting just how selective and competitive this honour is. Within VET Business, this distinction is even more exclusive, with typically only one or two students across the entire state recognised each year. This places our students’ achievement in VCE VET Business among the very best in the state.
As part of this recognition, both students will be formally honoured at the Premier’s VCE Awards ceremony, held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event is a prestigious occasion attended by government representatives, education leaders, and families, celebrating the dedication, commitment, and excellence of Victoria’s highest achievers.
This achievement reflects not only the students’ exceptional effort and dedication, but also the quality of teaching, support, and learning culture across our campus. It is a testament to what can be achieved when high standards are set and consistently upheld.
