Update from the Campus Principal

welcome.png
Thank You for Partnering With Us

A sincere thank you to all the parents and students who attended our recent Parent-Teacher Interviews. We greatly value the opportunity to work together to support every student’s learning.

One topic came up again and again: motivation . How do we motivate our young people to do their best?

If only there were a magic button! The reality is that motivation comes and goes, a bit like Melbourne’s weather.

Through our Learning to Learn (L2L) Framework , we are teaching students something even more important than motivation: what to do when motivation disappears. We want students to develop grit, resilience, determination, and the learning strategies to tackle challenges, solve problems, and keep going when learning becomes difficult. This can take time but like most things in life, daily focused habits can lead to embedded ways of working.

Confidence does not usually come before success. It grows from putting in the effort, overcoming challenges, and realising, “I can do hard things.”

Thank you again for your ongoing partnership. Together, we can help our young people build the habits, strategies, and perseverance they need to thrive.

If you were unable to attend Parent-Teacher Interviews, or if one of your child’s teachers was unavailable on the night, we encourage you to reach out to them directly. Our staff are always happy to provide feedback on your child’s progress.

INTRODUCING THE NEW CAMPUS SUPPORT TEAM

We have been evaluating our campus volunteer team structure to ensure it best meets the needs of our campuses moving forward, and we’re pleased to share that the new model has been successfully piloted at our Sydney campus.

This global transition will see us phase out all Campus Board and Campus Administrator roles and transition to the new Campus Support Team (CST) model in line with the new school year.

The CST consists of three members aligned to a core pillar, with one of the three assigned as the CST lead, and I am pleased to introduce you to our new team:

  • Tim Millott – CST Lead
  • Leigh McAlpin – Pastoral Care
  • Tim Millott – Culture
  • Sam Cook– Buildings

Please join me in congratulating and welcoming the team to their new roles, from Day 1 Term 3.

Why the change?

  • To reduce the burden on volunteers
  • To provide clearer lines of accountability
  • To ensure Campus Principals remain supported by the community in fulfilling their core responsibilities
  • To maintain strong community support and to simplify the structure.

What’s not changing

  • Campus support network remains the same
  • Escalation pathways remain the same
  • Student welfare processes remain the same
  • Campus operations and expectations remain the same.

I want to sincerely thank all outgoing Campus Administrators Mark Chirnside and Campus Board members Marcus McMillan, Ronnie Earl, Bill Murray, Lloyd Chirnside, Brent Hornsey and Brad Millott, for their contribution and commitment to the Melton Campus. Their support has been invaluable.

Thank you all in anticipation for supporting this new initiative.

ELEMENTS OF CAMPUS CULTURE

A positive school campus culture is built on strong relationships between students, staff, and families, where wellbeing, respect, and a sense of belonging are actively promoted. A strong culture does not happen by chance. It is built when students, staff, and families share common expectations and work towards the same goals. When everyone is aligned, students receive consistent messages about attendance, behaviour, learning, wellbeing, and personal responsibility, creating an environment where success is more likely.

Every element of campus culture is important because no single area can deliver excellence on its own. Academic achievement, wellbeing, engagement, parent partnerships, staff performance, governance, and school pride work together to create a safe, supportive, and high-performing learning community.

For this reason, raising campus culture is everyone's responsibility. By actively supporting each element and holding ourselves accountable to shared expectations, we create a campus where students thrive, staff feel valued, families feel connected, and the whole community benefits from a culture of excellence.

At Melton Campus, our Closing the Gap Initiative focuses on improving student outcomes through increased exam performance, higher assessment submission rates, greater on-time completion of work, and regular attendance at tutorials. We are pleased to see encouraging results across these key areas, demonstrating the positive impact of targeted support, strong student commitment, and a shared focus on academic growth. These outcomes highlight the value of setting high expectations and providing students with the tools they need to succeed.

Year 7-11 Exam and Academic Performance Summary

Year 7–11 examination data demonstrates a whole-school improvement of approximately 10.4% between Semester 2 2025 and Semester 1 2026 . The most significant gains were observed in Science, Humanities and English , with a substantial increase in the number of students achieving results above 80%. The data indicates that students are not only achieving at higher levels but that a large proportion of middle-achieving students are moving into higher performance bands. Mathematics remains a priority area for continued improvement; however, the overall trend is overwhelmingly positive and reflects strong academic growth across the school.

A huge congratulations on all for achieving a 10% overall increase in our Semester 1 2026 exams compared to the results from Semester 2 2025, reaching our Strive for 65 goal! A pizza lunch will be provided, date to be confirmed.

A special Congratulatins to the following students, who showed outstanding examination results, showing one or more results of 90%+ or 95%+. Keep up the Outstanding work!

Year 6 Highlight

In our current Science Assignment, the Year 6’s are looking at Sustainability. As a part of this, the students have been looking at the importance of bees in our ecosystem. The buzz around the classroom has included looking at the honey making process, comparing bees to another pollinator and analysing perfect habitats and environments for bees. Here are some examples of the bee-utiful work!

Staff Highlight - Mr. Justin Kanzamar

As the students know him Mr.K, has been with OSG for just over 4 years, teaching in the Primary Section of the School. This year he is teaching grade 4 and its safe to say he is a favourite amongst the students.

Almost 6 months ago, Mr.K and his wife welcomed their beautiful son, Mason, into the world. It has been an exciting and rewarding time as they have watched him grow and reach so many little milestones.

Mason is a very happy little boy who is always smiling and making lots of noise! He has recently started eating solids and is enjoying exploring all the new tastes and textures. It's amazing how quickly he's growing, and they can't believe he'll be six months old soon!

Mr.K and his wife feel incredibly lucky to have Mason in their lives and are enjoying every moment of this special journey together. They look forward to sharing more of his adventures as he continues to grow!

NEW SLT INITIATIVE: Tutorial Treats

As part of our Learning to Learn (L2L) focus at the Melton Campus, we are placing a strong emphasis on students making the most of tutorial opportunities. To encourage participation, the Student Leadership Team is excited to introduce Tutorial Treats.

Every time a student books and attends a tutorial, their name will be entered into a prize draw. At each fortnightly SLT Assembly, two winners will be drawn, one from Years 7-9 and one from Years 10-12, with each winner receiving a prize. Primary students nominated by their classroom teachers will also be entered into the prize draw.

The more tutorials a student attends, the more entries they will receive, increasing their chances of winning. Tutorials are a valuable way to seek clarification, strengthen understanding, build confidence, and stay on top of learning. We hope this initiative provides an extra incentive for students to take advantage of the support available and further develop their learning habits.

Good luck to all students, and happy learning!

NEW SLT INITIATIVE- 'Through the Lens'- Photography Competition

Throughout this term, we will be running our "Through the Lens" Photography Competition, giving students the opportunity to showcase their creativity and photographic talent.

A submission link will be provided for students to enter their photographs. Entries can be from any genre and do not need to be school-related. Students are welcome to submit photographs taken recently or in previous years. All entries must be authentic and appropriate, as selected photographs will be shared with our wider school community.

The competition winner and runner-up will receive House Points and a prize, with further details to be announced soon.

To give students plenty of time to capture and select their best work, entries will close in Week 7 on Friday 4 September. A selection of the best photographs will also be featured in a special booklet for parents and the wider community to enjoy.

We look forward to seeing the creativity, talent, and unique perspectives of our students through the lens.
