We have had a very busy and exciting fortnight in our classrooms!

On Thursday, students enjoyed a wonderful History Week incursion where they learned about the convict James Ruse, explored historic artefacts, and discovered how people first settled in our country. Students asked thoughtful questions and showed great curiosity about life in the past. A reminder that Mini History Museums are due next Friday, 15 May. We can’t wait to see the creative displays students produce at home.

In Mathematics, all students have continued to work hard.

Stage 3 has been exploring fractions, decimals and percentages, building connections between these concepts.

Stage 2 has been focusing on place value, strengthening and consolidating their understanding of numbers.

In PE, we have begun exploring fundamental movement skills through soccer, with a focus on coordination, teamwork and having fun while being active.

In Creative Arts, students have been experimenting with watercolour techniques, creating artworks inspired by an underwater theme. The blending of colours and techniques have been fantastic to see.

Over the last few weeks we had a wonderful visit with Flat Stanley and Flat Stacey. They joined us for gymnastics last week and were amazed at the skills we are developing. We hope they have a great time at their next destination!

We also loved welcoming our wonderful mothers into the classroom for a Mother’s Day morning tea and sharing some special time with the students. It was a beautiful morning celebrating the important people in our lives.

It’s been fantastic to see the enthusiasm and effort students are showing across all learning areas.

APSMO – Developing Mathematical Problem-Solving Skills in 2026

In 2026, all OneSchool Global Australia Primary students will participate in the Australasian Problem-Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO) program across Terms 2 and 3.

APSMO is a levelled mathematics program designed to develop students’ problem-solving, reasoning, and thinking skills through engaging and challenging tasks. Students work on problems suited to their current level, helping build confidence, creativity, and perseverance in mathematics.

How APSMO Works

• Students will take part in weekly APSMO sessions, focused on developing key problem-solving strategies.
• Activities include a mix of explicit teaching, hands-on challenges, and discussions, allowing students to explain their thinking and learn from others.
• Depending on the level, students may work more independently or more collaboratively.

APSMO Challenges

• Some APSMO levels includes challenges held twice each term (usually around Weeks 3 and 8).
• These challenges vary by level and may involve:

o Individual problem-solving papers, or
o Collaborative team challenges

• Not all levels complete formal tests; some focus on guided activities and games that build foundational skills.

APSMO Levels Explained
Students are already placed in one of the following APSMO levels based on their learning needs:

• Maths Olympiad (Junior)

Designed for high-achieving students, offering challenging problems that promote advanced reasoning, creativity, and flexible thinking.
• Maths Games

Focuses on developing problem-solving skills through engaging, real-world style problems while building enjoyment and confidence in mathematics.
• Maths Explorer

Introduces problem-solving through fun, practical, and collaborative activities that students can relate to.
• Maths Quest

Encourages students to explore early problem-solving concepts through interactive activities and games, supporting confidence and teamwork.

APSMO is embedded within our regular mathematics Lesson time and supports our ongoing commitment to high-quality, explicit teaching of problem solving. The APSMO program complements our classroom learning and helps students develop important thinking skills that may extend beyond the mathematics classroom.

Over the past fortnight, Secondary students at OneSchool Global Armidale have been actively engaged in a range of learning opportunities and events.

Students in Years 7–10 represented the school in the Australian Geography Competition, demonstrating strong knowledge and commitment. Students in Years 7, 9, and 11 also travelled to Maitland to take part in the OSG Aware program, gaining valuable insights to support their personal growth and decision-making. A special thank you to Mr Nelson Sanderson and Mr Colin McDonald for volunteering their time to transport students to and from Maitland, and to the Maitland campus for their hospitality—it is always a pleasure to visit.

Our playing field has also been freshly marked with a football field for lunchtime games, enjoyed by both Primary and Secondary students. Thank you to Mr Trent Jensen for creating an OSG logo for the field, adding to the space and enthusiasm during play.

On Tuesday, our Year 8 students demonstrated their practical skills in the kitchen once again, this time preparing Hummingbird muffins as part of their learning.

This morning, we were pleased to welcome our mothers to campus for a special Mother’s Day morning tea. It was a lovely opportunity for students to show their appreciation and spend time together celebrating the important role mothers play in our lives.

Campus Community Support (CCS) Program

OSG Armidale Campus is inviting community members to spend a rostered day on campus to support the Campus Community Support (CCS) program. We warmly invite members of our wider community to get involved — including grandparents, uncles, aunts and other family members — in addition to parents.

The role of the CCS is to provide a positive influence for the campus and to support school staff in view of them maintaining and upholding the ethos and values of the community. An important part of the CCS role is to be seen but not interfering, on the alert and helpful to the staff and students at all times.

Community Campus Support (CCS) personnel must complete the Volunteer Induction including a valid Working with Children Check.
